A Ramble About the Supernatural Fanfiction “Incubus”

Not my own ramble. It’s my fic, so that would be rather self-serving. Although so is this.
I am so excited for this coming weekend (May 14-16) and heading off to Chicago for Anime Central that I have no desire to work on the blog I had planned.
I will be taking a break next week since I will be enjoying said Con, and the following week I will be presenting a review of the experience with pictures.
So “Lines That Should No Longer Be Spoken In Movies” will have to wait a while.
In the meantime, I present to you this wonderful blog entry from AmyinSydney. Along with several other faithful readers, she is spreading the love of my two-year long epic fanfic across the fandom-verse, where I am known not as MissSuperCube or the Geek Girl, but simply as Crimson.
Right, I need to preface this ramble with a couple of disclaimers.
DISCLAIMER 1: I am not a reader of fan fiction, ok I have read a couple, read a couple that my friends have written, but as a rule, I don’t read them. I don’t read Wincest, ok I have read a couple, I mean inquiring minds want to know right, but as a rule, I don’t read it and none of the fan fiction I previously dabbled in involved slash.
DISCLAIMER 2: I LOVE DEAN WINCHESTER, obviously. I love that he is such a blokey bloke of a bloke. I love that he loves frisky women, classic rock, muscle cars, porn, all that I AM MAN *thumps chest* manly type stuff. Love it. Love him.
OK, so before I go any further, I should probably add here that Incubus is slash fan fiction. Yes you heard me, slash. But don’t hold that against it. Having so passionately stated DISCLAIMER 2, you may also be able to guess who is involved in said slash and why it confounds and baffles me that I am so, so OK with it.
Wait! Stop! Don’t go running for the hills just yet. While the slash is errrr surprisingly umm, enjoyable, it’s the story at the center of Incubus that grabs you. The intricate detailing of the Supernatural world, the accurate depiction of established characters, the introduction of new characters that are fascinating and rewarding and the development of a wonderful and somewhat awkward relationship which captures your heart. The hot and horny scenes are just an added bonus!
I came upon Incubus via twitter. A couple of my friends there thought I might like it. Mmmmm yes, might become obsessed with it is probably more precise. I was sent the link at a time when I was between books, so I started Incubus right away.
The first thing I found out was, it is very long. Like a 100 chapters long. Like 100 long chapters long. But don’t hold that against it.
The second thing I found out was, from the first chapter I was Incubus’ bitch. I could not stop reading it. It made me late for work, kept me up at night. I would sneak off at lunchtime, hiding out, trying to squeeze a chapter in during my break. Anxiously turning the pages gripped by the suspense, or sometimes blushing and squirming my way through the naughty bits while my co-workers obliviously munched on their sandwiches around me!
The author, Crimson masterfully weaves past Supernatural episodes into the world she creates, sometimes playing them out in a slightly different way. Loved and hated characters from the first 4 seasons pop up. Some stay and some thankfully meet their maker. There are even references to characters from a couple of the Supernatural novels. She takes the mythology of the Winchesters and extends it, building on what we already know and making it her own.
She captures exactly the right tone with Sam and Dean. Their spirit and relationship feels real and familiar, even though they both take very unexpected turns as the story reveals itself.
Which brings me to Sasha.
Tall, strong and beautiful inside and out. Regardless of how much you adore Sam or Dean, and believe me you will adore them even more as you read this story; I challenge you not to fall head over heels in love with Sasha….*sigh*.
How he effects the Winchester boys, how the relationship between the three of them develops, how he expands their world, Dean’s more than Sam’s, much to everyone’s astonishment especially Dean’s, will captivate you.
Crimson says she always saw Chace Crawford as her Sasha, but with Crayola red hair and blazing blue eyes, so that is how I always see him.
Interpretation of Sasha Kelly with thanks to Moksha_
Incubus is a bit of a phenomenon in the fan fiction world. There is fan art dedicated to it, other stories based on it and a website devoted to it. But before you seek any of that out, I encourage you to read it.
Incubus is a great yarn, with good and evil and all the things we love about Supernatural. It’s fast paced and thrilling, with action and angst a plenty, which as usual, is made all the more gloriously torturous by our attachment to the characters. But I guess, at its heart, it’s a love story, with passion and soul and beauty, and yes, some rather, a-hem, blue moments.
I don’t want to ramble on any more; I’m worried I have already been too spoilery.
So here’s the link. Go forth, read and enjoy….and please, give my love to Sasha, and tell him…I miss him. (Don’t be jealous Dean, I still love you the best).

Thanks for reading. Would you like to comment? Great! I’d love to hear from you!

Please DO go to the actual post at sweetondean and comment if you are an Incubus fan. And if not, but you might be interested in becoming a fan, please check out the fic.
Thanks to those two awesome ladies for their contributions of blog and artwork, and a big thanks to buffywoo for facilitating and letting me know about the Incubus love that continues even almost a year after the fic ended.
Wish me luck at the Con, all, and I will see you in a couple of weeks!

That is pretty freakin’ awesome. Although there are many of us who knew from the beginning that with the amount of love and dedication and perserverance that you put into this fic, of course you have created a phenomenon. That is your gift. With your passion and eloquent words, how can we not follow where you lead with a smile on our face and love in our heart?
@Megali: Awww. See, that blog entry had me tearing up, and now you’re doing it to me again!
I’m still diligently working on the original version. Oh to one day share it with even more readers…
