Manga vs Anime

My husband and I just finished the second episode of the anime version of High School of the Dead, a series about the zombie apocalypse starting in downtown Tokyo.

It was originally a manga that my husband adores and is still reading as new chapters come out.

So far the adaptation from manga to anime is spot on.

I watched my first anime before I read my first manga, Weiss Kreuz, an older series about assassins posing as flower shop workers during the day. It is not a great anime, but it has a special place in my heart, and like many of its fellows it also has an accompanying manga.

The manga for Weiss Kreuz is not typical, but tells the story of how the main characters ended up working together, a prequel to better understand the events in the anime.

Manga and Anime relations for a single series can develop in a number of different ways. Most people assume that the norm is to have a manga that existed first that they then translated into an anime to see the stationary pictures come alive with movement and voice actors.

Sometimes it is that clean cut, but not always.

Anime Central 2010

Since 2004 friends and I had attended Anime Detour in Bloomington, MN. It was small but still fun, and conveniently located. However, the awful girl that ran the Masquerade for cosplay competition ruined it for us and we decided to hit Chicago this year instead.

Rising far earlier than I would normally consider civil, six of us (with one other waiting for us in Chicago) left Minneapolis and arrived for the three day weekend with plenty of time to get into our costumes and start a new Con experience for the first time in years.

To compare, Anime Detour has just over 3000 attendees. Anime Central had around 17000.

For me the highlight of any Con is cosplaying. Halloween is my favorite holiday for a reason. I love dressing up.

This year I was an original design of Emeralda from the classic video game Xenogears, and one of the more seldom seen costumes for Sheryl Nome from the anime Macross Frontier.

We had a whole Macross Frontier Group the second day, which is always the most fun, and were stopped frequently for photos.

The Shoujo Love Triangle

If there was one literary/fictional device that I hate most it would be the love triangle, or even worse, a love shape. I hate them in reality too, but it’s even worse to throw them in where we’d like to have a happy ending, thank you, since happy endings happen even less often in real life.

Anime is one of the most rampant mediums that use such tactics. Love triangles and shapes are literally everywhere you turn, in almost every setting, especially shoujo.

SHOUJO: This title is used to describe anime that is intended for an audience of young females, and is usually centered on emotion-based storylines.

While this blog is called “The Shoujo Love Triangle” that is more in reference to the usage of triangles, not to say that I will only be looking at shoujo anime examples.

Let’s start with a couple classics, shall we?

Steampunk

Forgive me if my heart is not quite in this blog entry as I had already completed it to my great satisfaction last week only to have it wiped when a virus attacked my computer at work. But as one of my faithful readers said,

This just goes to show that these new-fangled transistors are unreliable. We need to learn about steam technology as quickly as possible!

And so I return.

Geek Tattoos

Tattooing has been around almost as long as human beings, seen in many cultures throughout history for many varying reasons, usually for personal, cultural, or spiritual expression or identification.

In the previous century there was a time when tattooing was seen as something only for the hardcore, scary people like bikers and gang members, or sailors who got drunk one night on leave. In Japan it is still generally thought of as a sign that you are part of the yakuza, the native gangsters.

But these days nearly everyone you run across could potentially have at least one tattoo, even if that one is merely a typical ‘tramp stamp’ on the lower back.

The average person might only have something small and simple, like Woodstock on their hip or a flower on their ankle, but even the unexpected person might surprise you with a slew of tattoos hidden beneath their clothing.

Tattoos with a geeky origin are more common these days than you might realize. All three of mine fall under that category.

Being a Girl Geek in the 21st Century

Being a girl geek in the new millennium can mean a number of things. There are anime geeks who gush over prettily drawn bishounen and the powers of their favorite magical girl. Video game geeks who can tell you every possibility of that date with Cloud at the Gold Saucer in Final Fantasy VII, including how to get Barret.

There are also comic geeks who have already chosen which ring color they are going to root for in DC’s Blackest Night saga, as well as those of us beaming over Marvel’s Rogue character finally being able to turn her power on and off (where’s that Cajun?).

And that’s not even mentioning all of the possible fangirling that geeks commit over certain movies, television shows, books, and more.

Me, I like to think of myself as a little of all of the above.
