A Not So Happy Supernatural Ending

Supernatural is up there with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly for me for favorite TV shows of all time. It has everything I love in a series. Great characters (and not too many of them). Snark. Pop culture references. Sci fi/fantasy. Beautiful people. Good acting (usually). Great writing (usually). And a linear plotline with many stand-alones to help balance a season.
So what went wrong?
There is a part of me that wishes Supernatural had stopped after Season 2 (with a few minor changes to leave us with a feeling of completion), instead of spanning through 5 seasons with another on the way. I liked aspects of seasons 3, 4, and 5, but not the whole of it, and I feel like I could have, like I should have.
Now, in Season 3’s defense, that was the year of the writer’s strike, so it had to try and wrap up a normal 22 or so episode season in only 16. That really hurt the show at no fault of the creators, writers, or actors. But we were forgiving then because they had a good excuse.
After that, Season 4 was mostly good and introduced the fan favorite character Castiel, but it also introduced Adam. There were bad episodes well before him, but that was when the show started to lose me and my faith in it.
I can’t avoid spoilers in this particular blog entry, so be forewarned now if you have not already guessed that.

Good Shows Should Die Young
The internet is buzzing with news that seems like confirmation of Chris Evans being cast as Captain America. But Marvel and Evans’ reps have said nothing of the kind. We’re still holding our breath, America, to find out just which actor is going to be our Captain.
I am sure there are more examples of this than I would even know how to address. All of us can think of at least one show we loved in its beginning that dragged on well past its due and then finally died, sputtering and gasping for breath.
And that’s a shame, because a good show should be able to go out on top, leave us with a feeling of catharsis, of satisfaction that we followed a good story from beginning to end and were rewarded for our loyalty.

Like Battlestar Gallactica.
Well, so I’ve heard. We’re still finishing up season two.
But all too often we are left unsatisfied waiting for a show to get ‘good again’ until it’s suddenly just done.
In rare cases, a show that has started to drag can come back with an amazing ending, like Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but not often.

Who Is Captain America?

Yes, I realize that this is not the promised blog about role playing handbooks, but the deluge of Captain America rumors has overtaken my mind recently. Every day my husband and I check for updates on whom the lucky man might be.
We were promised that we would be told the identity of the Captain America actor by the end of February. Obviously, that has not happened.
While I do have my own two cents that I will add later about the actor I think should be chosen, the real fascination here is in how public this whole process has been.
Now, to be fair, Marvel has stated that we should ignore all the rumors, because none of them have been official statements. We simply know that certain actors have read for the part, and some of them have announced/tweeted that they are no longer in the running. That hardly confirms anything on who might actually be chosen.
Plans for a new Captain America movie have been in the works for some time. After the huge success of Iron Man, and the slightly better numbers for Edward Norton’s The Incredible Hulk compared to Eric Bana’s Hulk, plans for an eventual Avengers movie has been the ultimate goal.
Thor is confirmed and cast. They won’t scrap Ant Man rumors no matter how much we groan. And now…Captain America.

Geek Tattoos
Tattooing has been around almost as long as human beings, seen in many cultures throughout history for many varying reasons, usually for personal, cultural, or spiritual expression or identification.
In the previous century there was a time when tattooing was seen as something only for the hardcore, scary people like bikers and gang members, or sailors who got drunk one night on leave. In Japan it is still generally thought of as a sign that you are part of the yakuza, the native gangsters.
But these days nearly everyone you run across could potentially have at least one tattoo, even if that one is merely a typical ‘tramp stamp’ on the lower back.
The average person might only have something small and simple, like Woodstock on their hip or a flower on their ankle, but even the unexpected person might surprise you with a slew of tattoos hidden beneath their clothing.
Tattoos with a geeky origin are more common these days than you might realize. All three of mine fall under that category.

Vampires On TV
Vampires on TV do not begin and end with me, sadly, so I have not had the pleasure of seeing every single vampire television show ever to grace (or disgrace) the small screen.

I have, however, seen an impressive amount of the many that existed and will be discussing those that I watched, as well as my opinion on why certain vampire shows sucked so badly—pun intended—and why others were quite entertaining.
Okay, so in my opinion, any vampire television show is going to have some level of entertainment to it, even if that is only to make fun of it. Why else would I bother watching the series premiere of The Vampire Diaries last Thursday, a blatant attempt by The CW to bank off the Twilight phenomenon, unless I was expecting horrible, horrible entertainment out of it?
As for my first vampire series, it began its run in 1992.

Why Supernatural is the Most Underrated Show on TV
It was the summer of 2005. I was home on break from college, being a little lazy between shifts at the movie theater, and a preview for a new series starting that fall caught my attention on TV. It was going to be called Supernatural, about two brothers fighting evil across the country.
Having been a huge X-Files, Buffy, and Angel fan, I remember being very excited at something new finally coming along to fill that gap in my life. While I knew I probably wouldn’t get to watch the show right away, as I never had real access to television in college, my interest was immediately piqued.
Of course, there was one problem, I thought to myself, “if only they were cute”.
Yeah, I really thought that. I claim temporary insanity. Read the rest of this entry »
Being a Girl Geek in the 21st Century

Being a girl geek in the new millennium can mean a number of things. There are anime geeks who gush over prettily drawn bishounen and the powers of their favorite magical girl. Video game geeks who can tell you every possibility of that date with Cloud at the Gold Saucer in Final Fantasy VII, including how to get Barret.
There are also comic geeks who have already chosen which ring color they are going to root for in DC’s Blackest Night saga, as well as those of us beaming over Marvel’s Rogue character finally being able to turn her power on and off (where’s that Cajun?).
And that’s not even mentioning all of the possible fangirling that geeks commit over certain movies, television shows, books, and more.
Me, I like to think of myself as a little of all of the above.
